Overview
Discovery refers to the process Statseeker uses to locate devices on your network, and depending on the type of Discovery being run:
- Test communications between Statseeker and the device for future data collection
- Collect configuration information from those devices, building an inventory of monitored hardware
Statseeker Observability Appliances running the Ping service communicate with monitored hardware via Internet Control Method Protocol (ICMP) to determine device availability and response time. Running a Remote Ping-Only Discovery from an Observability Appliance adds discovered devices as Ping-Only devices, which are subsequently monitored via ICMP by the Observability Appliance. You can also use ping-only monitoring on additional IP addresses on a device, such as the virtual IP used by a load balancing system.
A ping-only entity is created for every device discovered by an Observability Appliance. If multiple Observability Appliances are monitoring a single device, a ping-only entity is created for each Observability Appliance allowing for the presentation of ping data for a single device from multiple monitoring locations throughout the network. For more information, see:
Running a Remote Ping-Only Discovery
The Remote Ping Only Discovery process can be launched from either the option in Discovery My Network, or from Observability Appliances section in the Admin Tool.
Select either of the following:
- Admin Tool > Network Discovery > Discovery My Network > Remote Ping-Only Discovery
- Admin Tool > Observability Appliances > Remote Ping Discovery
